Audi rear washer leaking into the tailgate?
Green fluid near the boot latch. A wiper that stops in the wrong place. Water inside the tailgate. These were all part of the same frustrating fault on my Q8.
Before buying another motor, look at what's actually failed.
What I noticed before the repair.
Not every rear-wiper fault looks the same. These are the signs I encountered on the Q8 over time.
Green fluid or staining
Washer fluid made its way towards the boot latch, leaving visible residue.
Water after using the washer
A persistent small leak appeared inside the tailgate, even while the washer still sprayed.
Unusual parked position
The rear wiper could stop in the wrong place rather than returning to its normal position.
Stored fault codes
My OBD reader recorded faults associated with the rear-window wiper and comfort system.
What was actually found.

The leak was small. The corrosion wasn't.
I'd lived with a minor rear-washer leak for years. Washer fluid collected inside the tailgate near the boot lock, and eventually the motor stopped behaving properly. The obvious solution would have been to replace the complete wiper motor.
Instead, I removed the assembly and opened it up to understand what had failed. There was plenty of moisture, rust and contamination inside. The mechanism was in poor condition, but the motor itself wasn't necessarily finished.
Two problems had developed together: the washer-fluid connection was leaking, and corrosion had affected the system used to determine where the wiper should stop.
What finally worked?
Cleaning and repairing the original assembly restored the wiper's movement and parking behaviour. The remaining washer-fluid leak was traced to a small failed internal seal. After fitting a compatible replacement, the connection sealed immediately.
The same motor went back into the car. The wiper and washer were working normally again, without buying a complete replacement unit.
Worth knowing: green staining, water ingress and incorrect wiper parking can be related symptoms, but a blocked or cracked external spray nozzle can be a separate fault. I found that out too.
Why put together a repair kit?
The diagnosis took far longer than the final seal replacement. Identifying the right part, understanding the motor and working out what tools were useful involved plenty of trial and error.
That's the value of the FixInstead guide. It brings together the actual repair experience, original photographs and practical instructions, so another owner doesn't have to repeat all that research.
Compare the two repair options ↗Q8, A6 C8 Avant and Allroad.
This case study is based on the original 4K9 955 711 rear wiper motor in a 2019 Q8. The same motor family is used in certain related Audi models.

Check the motor
The part number is the useful starting point when assessing which repair option suits a vehicle.
Before replacing the motor.
Why is green fluid appearing near my Audi boot latch?
In this 2019 Q8, washer fluid was escaping inside the tailgate and collecting near the latch. The staining became an important clue, especially after using the rear washer.
Does a rear wiper that parks in the wrong position need a new motor?
Not always. Corrosion inside this motor affected its ability to identify the parked position. The original assembly was restored to working order.
Could the motor still be repairable if the rear washer works?
Yes. The washer and motor can still operate despite a leaking internal connection. On this Q8, replacing the failed seal stopped the remaining leak.
Is this relevant to the Audi A6 C8 Avant or Allroad?
The motor family is shared with certain A6 C8 estate variants. Check whether the existing motor is marked 4K9 955 711 before choosing a repair option.
Will I need a diagnostic scanner?
If fault codes were recorded during a motor failure, they may need clearing after the repair. Fixing a simple leak on a motor that was otherwise working may not require that step.
Keep your working motor. Fix the part that failed.
